Your role
The team delivers risk insight to a wide range of clients through our work, which includes the following kind of project:
- analysing flood risk to an insurance client’s portfolio to support risk pricing and exposure management;
- applying a range of tools to analyse risk to individual, high value assets;
- using catastrophe models to assess flood impacts to people, infrastructure and economies in vulnerable countries;
- using risk information to increase climate resilience through the implementation of disaster risk finance;
- helping clients to understand how their exposure to risk may change in a future climate;
- bringing together JBA’s expertise and information to deliver bespoke client solutions.
You will be involved in running JBA’s catastrophe models and tools, using statistics and GIS to analyse results, and creating clear and effective reports and presentations for different audiences. Our work requires a knowledge of hydrology, hydraulic modelling, climate change and risk. You will help clients to interpret results for their decision making.
In a typical week, you are likely to be involved in more than one project, developing solutions to clients’ challenges and delivering to deadlines. You will work with other teams to deliver projects that use JBA’s market-leading technology and you will be encouraged to contribute to adapting the team’s direction in line with company objectives.
The team member we’re looking for
We are looking for candidates with qualifications in Hydrology, GIS, Mathematics, Natural Hazards, Meteorology, Earth Sciences, or similar. We will consider applications from recent graduates and individuals in their early career who are collaborative, keen to innovate and committed to delivering value to clients.
The role would ideally suit someone who likes a challenge, picks up new skills quickly and thinks innovatively. Successful candidates will be enthusiastic, organised, work well with colleagues and be comfortable taking the initiative.
Qualifications
An undergraduate degree in a related discipline, or equivalent experience. This could include qualifications in Hydrology, GIS, Mathematics, Natural Hazards, Meteorology, Earth Sciences, or similar.
Essential attributes for the role
Essential attributes that you should demonstrate include:
- Interest in natural hazards and catastrophe modelling
- A professional manner with strong interpersonal skills, comfortable interacting with more experienced colleagues and clients
- Experience of teamwork/collaborative environments both in person and virtually
- Demonstrable ability to understand and communicate complex technical concepts verbally and in writing
- Experience with GIS platforms (e.g. QGIS)
- Be able to organise own time
- Be able to distinguish the important elements of your work and focus on these as a priority
- Competent use of core MS Office 365 suite of tools (e.g. Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, OneNote, Teams)
Desirable attributes for the role
Additionally, you would ideally demonstrate one or more of the following attributes:
- A postgraduate degree in a related discipline
- Prior experience of modelling natural hazards
- Relevant industry experience
- Programming experience, e.g. Python, R, SQL
- Experience of Linux command line with scripting
- Familiar with use of Microsoft Excel (e.g. pivot tables, vlookups)

JBA supports hybrid working which provides for greater flexibility with the way that we work.
The full-time role will be located in our modern, eco-friendly offices at Broughton Park, near Skipton, North Yorkshire. Our team has adopted a hybrid working approach with flexibility to work some of the time from home. We supply basic equipment to support this. You will need to be in the Skipton office a minimum of 3 days a week.
